LANDEFEN reaches back to the Old English language of landholding and measure. Its unusual history survives through the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle and three respected dictionaries.

The surviving evidence · 1085
“...hī fǣddon þone here ǣlc be his landefne.”

The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle uses landefne in a sentence meaning that each man supported the army according to the extent of his landed holding. It is the only form directly quoted by these dictionaries.

How the word reaches us

The Chronicle gives a form used inside a sentence, not a labelled dictionary headword. In the phrase be his landefne, the preposition be places the word in an oblique grammatical setting. A lexicographer must therefore decide what its basic or citation form was.

Henry Sweet and J. R. Clark Hall both give landefen as that headword, although they disagree about its grammatical gender. Their reading treats the Chronicle’s landefne as an inflected or reduced form of landefen. Bosworth–Toller instead gives land-efne itself as a neuter headword.

That disagreement is understandable. The word is exceptionally rare, the evidence is late, and related Old English forms such as andefn, andefen and andefne also vary. The meanings offered by the dictionaries, however, are closely aligned: each concerns the measure, proportion or amount of land.

A word carried forward. The Chronicle preserves landefne; Henry Sweet and J. R. Clark Hall carry it into their dictionaries under landefen. Across the different readings, one idea remains constant: the measure, proportion or extent of land. That rare survival gives LANDEFEN a history unusually well matched to its modern possibilities.
